Better Late Than Never
Better Late Than Never
is a virtual skateboard art show by Stubby Duckworth,
exploring mental health and living with PTSD.
From paranoia leading to days and weeks too terrified to leave the house, to crippling panic attacks leading to fully nonverbal hours and days, and all of the glimmers of hope in between.
A collection of analog drawings, paintings, and collage from 2012-2020 repurposed as skateboard art in January 2021.
The show was originally intended to launch in March 2021, but after spending weeks staring my mental health square in the face, I collapsed under the pressure I had put on myself and fully burnt out. I decided to shelve the project and leave the launch date TBD.
Over the past few weeks I’ve felt a pull to resurface this project. I spent a day or so cleaning up the structure I set up 18 months ago and just wanted to get it into the world without any further curation.
Viewing Options
Better Late Than Never was originally built as a virtual gallery in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, as a way to share art without having to share physical space. The show can be found in its original intended form here and a more mobile-friendly collection of the board art can be found below.

Each graphic is available as a 1-of-1 physical edition on your choice of deck size and comes with a custom drawn top graphic.

Title: Round Trip
Year: 2020
Medium: Found Watercolor, 300gsm BFK paper
Size: 5x7”
Note: Recurring dreams of near-death trauma at times send me into a sense of altered reality for days on end. Convinced everything I see, feel, do is an illusion on a greater timeline. Painted this a few days into a week long episode, full of fear, trying my best to ride out the storm. The original painting now sits with someone I consider one of my biggest inspirations in processing trauma through art. Thank you, love you.

Title: (LOSS) Across Three Winters
Year: 2017-2020
Medium: Staedtler Lumocolor marker, sprayed Pigment dye, 300gsm BFK paper
Size: 30x44”
Note: Started in February 2017 a few weeks after moving to Portland, and finished May 2020, 75 days into the stay-at-home order. A giant sheet of paper that I would go to and doodle on when I was feeling too overwhelmed with thought and needed somewhere to put my frantic energy. Hundreds of moments told in tiny scribbles.

BLTN_012
Title: Power // Forgiveness (LOSS)
Year: 2019
Medium: Bingo marker, 300gsm BFK paper
Size: 30x44”
Note: Between gigs, feeling the panic and stress of always needing to produce when I don’t have work on my plate, but too frozen from the panic to do anything I consider productive. Fighting the guilt of “not doing enough.” The power struggle of shame and compassion. An entry into the (LOSS) series, exploring ways to use fast-paced scribbles to exert anxious energy.
BLTN_013: The Fog
BLTN_013
Title: The Fog
Year: 2019
Medium: Pen & Notebook paper
Size: 1x3”
Note: I tried to get on the bus again today. I kept feeling the electric-like shocks every time I got close to the door. The panic hits, the crying starts. Sit back down, breathe, try again. Don’t think and get over the hump. I can’t go, I’m frozen. It’s all spinning too fast and I’m stuck here. I tried to get on the bus again today. I thought I was going to make it this time.

BLTN_019
Title: What Do You See
Year: 2017
Medium: Watercolor, Strathmore watercolor paper, coffee, pen
Size: 8x10”
Note: Before anyone knew who Stubby Duckworth was, I was sitting in a basement experimenting with hand illustration styles signed as SD with no intention of them ever being connected back to me. Some paint splashes and coffee stains, and pen strokes trying to find comfort in drawing the first thing my mind can find. Fighting off the guilt of “not doing enough.” The power struggle of shame and compassion. An entry into the (LOSS) series, exploring ways to use fast-paced scribbles to exert anxious energy.

BLTN_035: Ten Days In The Desert
BLTN_035
Title: Ten Days In The Desert
Year: 2016
Medium: Pen, Paper, Photograph
Size: 5x7?
Note: The first Stubby Duckworth piece before I knew I wanted to even use it as an alias. Before the illustration I had the account for posting nonsense photos. We were moving from Long Island to PDX, camping in our car and freelancing. We spent about a week in Joshua Tree, mostly sleeping on public land just outside the park, but we did land a few nights in a Joshua Tree National Park campsite. One day we met this older local outside of a general store named Wayne. Dude chatted us up forever, telling us how to survive the wilderness, where the camp best spots are, everywhere he’s been. But his favorite was camping up in the Valley of Fire. He swore that if we were only going to one more spot on the trip, that was the place. Our last day before leaving town we came across the posting board at the entrance of the campsite where people left each other notes of meeting places and times since cell service in the area was spotty. Left a little tribute to Wayne on the way out. Unfortunately we never made it to the Valley of Fire but I think about him and his stories constantly.
